It's Chemical Peel Season. Find out why it's the perfect treatment for the fall.
Fall is here which means…new season, new skin! This is the perfect time to switch things up in the treatment room. What do we recommend for this season? Peels. Peels. Peels.
Because your skin is more sensitive to the sunlight, the fall is when you should consider getting a chemical peel. The days begin to get shorter (I’m sad about it too), and the weather is cooler, meaning there is less moisture in the air and sun exposure. Now, you may have heard of chemical peels and that they’re good for your skin, but may not know what they are and why you should get one. Keep reading for all your questions answered. You’ll learn about what a chemical peel is, its benefits, and the kinds of peels we offer at EA.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure in which an acid-based chemical solution is applied to your skin. Doing so causes the removal of the top layers of skin and the surfacing of smoother skin. While it is usually done to the face, it can be applied to other areas such as your chest or back. There are different kinds of peels with depths ranging from light to deep – the kind to choose depends on the skin conditions you are trying to treat.
Now, let’s get into the “chemical” part. We know it can be scary to hear the words “chemical” and “peeling” when it comes to dealing with your face. That’s why we’re here to help you understand and learn a little bit more about how great this treatment is. There are different active ingredients depending on the peel you’re getting.
Glycolic acid - treats fine lines, wrinkles, photodamaged skin, and hyperpigmentation
Salicylic acid - reduces inflammation and redness caused by acne, and lowers oil production which clogs your pores
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) - reduces the appearance of acne scars, treats sun-damaged skin and pigmentation issues
Kojic acid - reduces age spots, sun spots, and helps with uneven skin tone and pigmentation
Retinoic acid - removes dead skin cells, increases cell renewal, and improves skin texture
Lactic acid - treats hyperpigmentation, age spots, and uneven skin tone
What are the benefits of doing a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are used to treat an array of skin conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, scars, hyperpigmentation, acne, melasma, and more. Peels help even skin tone and texture for glowing radiant skin. They deliver dramatic results in a relatively short time span, which can expedite the process of your end goal.
Types of Chemical Peels: Timed vs. Self-Neutralizing Peels
Chemical peels are a perfect lunchtime service – they typically take no longer than 30 minutes to complete and are easy to do during your lunch break, or after work. Let’s get into the difference between a timed and self-neutralizing – basically what makes the difference between people who peel more visibly than others.
Timed Peels
The chemical is applied to the skin and instantly removed after a specific amount of time (determined by your esthetician) with a cool compress. Doing a timed peel allows for more control regarding the depth of the peel. Although not likely, you may see a very light shedding of the skin for up to a few days after the treatment.
Self-neutralizing Peels
Self-neutralizing peels are layered peels that remain on the skin for an extended period time after the service. Different acids and elements are applied to your skin in layers and are washed off in the evening or the next day, as consulted by your esthetician. These peels are typically medium-depth and will cause visible peeling. These peels are highly customizable and are used to treat very specific skin concerns depending on your needs.
How often should I get a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are NOT a one-and-done treatment. In order to see the most effective results, it’s best to do a series, one month apart. This is determined by different factors such as what your concerns and the severity of your conditions. Of course, it’s best to consult with your esthetician to achieve optimal results.
