Dry Brushing 101: A Step-By-Step Guide to Glowing Skin

We're all about glowing inside & out and one way to achieve radiant skin is by incorporating dry brushing into your routine. In this guide, we'll dive into everything you need to know about dry brushing – including what it is, how to do it, skin benefits, and special pro tips on getting the most out of your dry brushing regimen.

First up... what is it? It is the process of massaging a dry brush all over your body. Sounds simple enough, right? Yes, it really is that easy! The best part is that the benefits range from exfoliation to improving circulation & gut health.

Here are some key benefits of dry brushing

  1. Exfoliation: Say goodbye to crocodile skin and hello to a brighter and smoother complexion! Dry brushing is a form of physical exfoliation which increases cell turnover and rids dead skin to help even texture. This also allows for products like oils and creams to better penetrate the skin and deliver active ingredients where they're needed most. If you suffer from ingrown hairs either because of genetics or treatments like body waxing, this is a must-have in your arsenal. Dry brushing between your sessions helps decrease the likelihood that your hair will get trapped underneath the skin.

  2. Increase in blood flow and circulation: The brushing movement helps stimulate blood flow and increases your circulation which is key for your health in general. But specifically when looking at your skin, having proper circulation means oxygen and nutrients are delivered to your cells minimizing dryness, signs of fine lines, swelling, and puffiness.

  3. Stimulation of the lymphatic system: Moving a brush all along your body helps promote lymphatic drainage which is responsible for eliminating toxins and waste. The benefits for your body include a reduction in inflammation, improved immune and gut health, and an overall enhanced skin appearance.

Now that we know the benefits, the proper way to go about it is also just as important. Let's jump in. 👇

How to dry brush

Often dry brushing is advertised as something to do in the shower while wet... but the key word here is "dry". Dry brushing in water is inviting an excess of bacteria formation and potentially even mold, so we absolutely recommend doing this before a shower.

Dry brushing routines can be as long and intricate as you want or as short and sweet as you have time for. It might even depend on the day, but the idea is to move the brush along your whole body to reap the benefits.

  • Dry brushing is done nude. An ideal time is right before a shower especially since you're working toward the process of removing dead cells.

  • Start at the soles of your feet. From there you'll work your way up your body, brushing in upward motions toward your heart.

  • 3-4 firm strokes per area are sufficient if you have less time and want to complete the process a little faster, but take as much time as you need or have. Don't apply too much pressure because then you will bypass the lymphatic system and potentially irritate your skin.

  • When you get to the stomach area, brush in a clockwise motion to help activate your digestive system.

  • Be sure to apply your hydrating products to your damp skin after dry brushing and showering for the best absorption.

Remember like anything related to skincare, it's all about consistency. To get the most out of dry brushing and to see results, it is recommended at least 1-2x per week.
